A middle aged father goes through a mid-life crises, has an affair with a younger woman, divorces his wife and marries the mistress. What‘s so complicated about that? It’s been played out in countless sitcoms, made-for-TV dramas and movies galore, not to mention in real life. What gets complicated in It’s Complicated, a new romantic comedy which opens in theatres on Christmas Day, is a surprising development that happens between the ex-couple ten years after their divorce.

Nancy Meyer, the director and writer, is no novice when it comes to bringing quirky relationship films to the big screen. She has helmed such movies as Something’s Gotta Give which starred Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton, What Women Want with Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt and The Holiday which featured Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet and Jude Law. Meyer is one of the top female U.S. directors and obviously is used to working with an impressive group of big name actors. Streep is highly regarded as one of the world’s most versatile and gifted actresses and most recently starred in Julie and Julia, Doubt and Mamma Mia!, She is joined in It’s Complicated by leading men, Alec Baldwin (30 Rock (television role), My Sister’s Keeper and The Departed) and Steve Martin (The Pink Panther, Shopgirl).

The movie is set in Santa Barbara, California where Streep’s character, Jane, runs a bakery restaurant business. Having been divorced for so long and having three adult children together, she and ex-husband, Jake, played by Baldwin, have developed a rather friendly and pleasant relationship over the years. She’s accepted her new life as a single mom and career woman – she’s also accepted his marriage to a pretty and energetic younger woman (Lake Bell). It seems no big deal when Jane and Jake decide to travel together to attend their son’s college graduation. However, during this out of town excursion, they couldn’t have expected the unexpected would happen – that the long-divorced couple would fall in love again.

Jane and Jay struggle with their renewed passion and all of a sudden, Jay’s young wife has competition – his former wife. It’s the ultimate irony – old wife becomes new mistress. To further complicate matters, enter Adam, played by Steve Martin. He’s a divorced architect hired to design Jane’s new kitchen who soon becomes attracted to her. She likes him too. So now what should Jane do? Whom should she pick? She has history and shared memories with Jay and now here’s a chance to do over what went wrong and put their family back together again. However, Adam is funny, charming and interested – and most importantly, not married. It certainly is complicated.

Filmed in New York and distributed by Universal Pictures, It’s Complicated was filmed with a $70 million budget. On its web site, the movie studio describes the humorous romance as “a comedy about love, divorce and everything in between.”
