“It’s Complicated” (Universal) is directed by Nancy Meyers. The movie is about the complicated relationship of a divorced couple, Jane (Meryl Streep) and Jake (Alec Baldwin), who, ten years after a friendly divorce, suddenly find themselves irresistibly drawn to each other. While out of town at their son’s graduation, they dine together and soon find themselves in a new complex relationship, an extramarital affair. Jake has remarried to a younger woman, Agness (Lake Bell). Jane is now the other woman in this affair with her ex-husband. She is also involved with an architect, Adam (Steve Martin). Jane’s relationship status: It’s complicated. So ensues the labyrinthine love quadrangle that forces the question: Can love be successful the second time around?

Jane, played by Meryl Streep, is the successful owner of a bakery in Santa Barbara and the mother of three grown children. Almost a stock role for Streep. Jake, played by Alec Baldwin, is her cheating ex-husband who is remarried with a young son. Undoubtedly, as with “30 Rock”, Baldwin plays just another variation of himself. He is the awe-shucks guy who is falling for Jane but sees the triangle before him and the inherent complications. So, the title, “It’s Complicated”, which sounds more like a Facebook relationship status than a romantic comedy, stars great talented actors who merely seem to be sitting in on a generic tableau.

Still, this movie is a worthwhile see. These may not be their greatest roles or finest hours, but these fine actors, including John Krasinski as Harley, are superb at their job despite the stock screen play. Beyond its weaknesses, this movie does take on the changing climate of personal relationships. People are living in busy, fast-paced, instant messaging times. Lives can be too over-scheduled to get it right the first time. Perhaps a second chance is something everyone could use. It’s complicated, as a relationship term, is used to indicate that one has a tie with another, but issues still exist. The commitment to explore commitment is what is emphasized.
